This evening at approximately 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, WCSART received a 911 call from a lost hiker. The hiker was from Texas and could not describe the trail he was on or where he had parked his vehicle. We were able to make cellular contact with him and gain a coordinate using google maps (the individual had deleted his compass app and did not have enough service to re-download it). A team member was then able to provide a heading remotely to get the very happy Texan back to his vehicle.

At approximately 2:15 pm this afternoon, WCSART responded to a female hiker on Rock Bridge Trail with a non-ambulatory injury to her right leg. Team members accessed and packaged the patient before evacuating her back to the trailhead. During the carryout, multiple low-angle belays were necessary. A special thanks to Red STAR Wilderness EMS for lending a mutual aid hand today and Breathitt-Wolfe EMS INC. for transporting the hiker to definitive care.

Team members were able to stabilize the subject’s injuries and package her in a rescue litter for carry out. After reaching the trailhead the subject self transported to a hospital with the assistance of her fiancé. A huge thank you to the U.S.Forest Service employees and interns who were working nearby and lent a hand on the carryout.

The backcountry has the allure of fewer people, less hustle-bustle, and clear starry nights that show stars abound.

But what can we do when things don’t go as planned…

Wolfe County Search and Rescue would prefer not to be involved in your hike out. However, with the backcountry becoming more popular and with an increase in new campers traveling in for a night or two of camping, injuries seem to be on the rise.
